It seems that Palm is ready to show what they are up to and release the Mojo software development kit for Web OS. Senior Vice President of Application Software and Services at Palm Michael Abbott announced at the Web 2.0 Expo that Palm is ready to release Mojo to all developers.

Mojo SDK was until now available only to closed circle of selected developers. He demoed the Mojo Messaging Service, basically a push notofication service that can be used to send status updates like IM notification, new mail arrival etc.
Mojo Messaging service is something similar to one presented by Apple few weeks ago in SDK 3.0. It seems that Palm has loaded his guns and is ready to take over all the developers available on the market. Anyone with a good knowledge of HTML, CSS and Javascript coding can become a developer, and that is Mojos biggest advantage over all other platforms.

The only problem that existed so far was the “old Palm developers” that were “neglected”. Problem was solved with a “Classic” emulator that allows older Palm OS applications to run on the Palm Pre, and all the future Web OS devices.

So if you are good at HTML, CSS or Javascript and have good ideas about inovative applications, hop on to Palm Developers page where you can register for Mojo release. Unlike Apple, Google, RIM and others Palm will not ask developers to join in any kind of association or charge a fee for it. So considering everything that developers need to go trough to become iPhone or BlackBerry developers we think that this is a great move.

Hmm, I guess Palm hit the sweet spot of all the web devs in the world by introducing something completely different with Web OS and Mojo SDK. It will have a significant impact in the development world I assure you. The reason why is pretty simple, web developers that can code in Javascript , CSS and HTML vastly outnumbers the “real” coders that deal with other C languages. Mojo SDK and Mojo Applications Framework allow developers to recompile and port existing apps or develop completely new local or web applications for the new Palm Pre, with a mere knowledge of web standards.

Application build in that way can be either stored and launched on the web or locally on the device, so they are available when you go offline. We will be talking a lot about Mojo and Web OS in the upcoming days so we won’t be going in detail in this article.

The main reason for this article is to inform everyone that the wheels are in motion. One of the probable motivations behind the Mojo and Web OS philosophy is the crucial ability to attract massive interest from developers. You really don’t need to know all the tricks in Java, C, C++ or Objective-C to develop for Palm Pre, all the web developers can do it now. And trust me the margin is pretty high for the latter, i can bet you anything you like that when Mojo SDK and FW is released o the general public every other web developer will be watching closely. Palm has made an unique effort to attract developers from other platforms that at this time hold much more interest and profit than Palm Pre, especially when old Palm OS developers are not in the game anymore.

The proof of that is already here, first preDevCamp is preparing for launch as we speak. For those unfamiliar with the story behind BarCamp and DevCamp i suggest some reading material.

preDevCamp is being planed in over 60 major cities around the world and it will start one week after the official US release of the Palm Pre. It’s basically a non profit gathering of developers to share the knowledge and help each other develop web applications for Palm Pre (local and web based) using both the Mojo SDK and traditional web standards.

Attendees will include mobile developers, web developers, UI designers, and testers, all working together over the weekend. Development projects will include both solo and team efforts. While some attendees will wish to work solo during the event, we encourage attendees to team up, based on expertise, to work in ad-hoc project development teams. All attendees should be prepared to work on a development project during the event.

Attendees will be able to:

* Create new applications for the Palm Pre.
* Migrate existing mobile and Linux based applications to the Palm Pre.
* Test and optimize applications for the Palm Pre.

The organizers of preDevCamp are @whurley, @giovanni, and @dancrumb and you can contact them on Twitter, or visit preDevCamp offical page and sign up, or use their official Twitter feed. We wish them best of luck and we will see you in one of 60 cities that will hold preDevCamp :)
